Hello Friends ,
I would wish you a happy spring, but looking at the forecast I think it’s best to just stay quiet for now. Whatever the weather, Congress will return on Tuesday after a two-week recess that gave members lots of opportunities to hear from constituents and take the pulse of their districts, for better or worse. While the gun issue remained at the forefront with the March for Our Lives, many Republican members used the time at home to sell voters on the benefits of the tax cut bill they passed last year. And in Washington, continuing personnel shuffles in President Trump’s administration, combined with White House moves on immigration, trade and other priorities, have created new agenda items (and perhaps new worries) for the House and Senate to face when they return.
In this edition of the newsletter, GAI Fellow Katina Slavkova walks us through one of these new items on the Senate’s to-do list: the nomination of Gina Haspel to become CIA Director. As Katina lays out, Ms. Haspel’s road to confirmation may be a bumpy one. Here at GAI, we have a busy spring ahead with a full slate of introductory and advanced classes coming up. I encourage you to check out our website to find your next training opportunity. Can’t choose just one? Consider our certificate program in legislative studies, a great way to go in-depth at your own pace.
Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you soon!
Kristin
