Dear Friends,

The biggest story on Capitol Hill- and the theme of this month’s newsletter – is the debt limit. Now that House Republicans have passed what amounts to an initial offer (and promptly left town for a week-long recess),  the focus will shift to whatever move President Biden and Senate Democrats make next. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s Monday announcement that the so-called debt limit “X date” could arrive as early as June 1 has increased the urgency (and anxiety levels) on the Hill, and seems to have spurred Biden to set a meeting with House and Senate leaders for next week.

Keep reading for more on this topic from our Fellow Katina Slavkova, whose article pays particular attention to its potential consequences for the FY24 appropriations process and the tension between defense and non-defense funding.

Our wonderful GAI podcasters have been busy this spring. Be sure to catch up on recent episodes, including one featuring Congressman Brendan Boyle discussing the debt ceiling with Josh and Laura, another with former Congressman David Price joining Laura to reflect on his long career in Congress, and an episode where Matt, Mark and Josh talked about… whatever popped into their heads. If you’ve got ideas for future topics or guests, hit us up!

It’s been a thrill to see so many of you in person on Capitol Hill over the past few months, and we’ve got a packed schedule coming up. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, please get in touch and let me know how we can help.

All the best,

Kristin
